Heat, Cold, and PVC: Why Your Plumbing Eventually Cracks

People blame freezes for broken pipe, and freezes certainly finish the job. But most Central Texas plumbing failures are the accumulated result of thousands of hot-cold cycles, plus UV degradation on every inch of pipe the sun can reach.

PVC moves, and it moves a lot

PVC has a high coefficient of thermal expansion — considerably higher than copper or steel. A long run of exposed pipe going from a 40-degree January night to a 110-degree July afternoon changes length measurably.

Underground pipe barely notices; soil temperature is stable. Exposed pipe on the pad, feeding a water feature, running along a fence, or crossing a hot deck goes through the full swing every single day, not just seasonally. Day-to-night cycling is relentless.

The pipe itself can handle the movement. What cannot is everything rigidly holding it: strapped runs with no flex, pipe glued hard into a pump or heater port, and fittings sandwiched between two anchored points. The stress goes into the joints and the equipment ports because it has nowhere else to go.

Sunlight is doing separate damage

UV degrades unprotected PVC. Over years it chalks, discolors, and loses impact strength at the surface. Pipe that has been in direct Texas sun for a decade is measurably more brittle than pipe that was shaded or buried.

You can see it: white pipe that has gone gray and dusty, with a surface that leaves a chalky residue on your fingers. That pipe will crack from a bump, a freeze, or a hard water-hammer event that new pipe would have shrugged off.

Painting exposed PVC with a light-colored, PVC-compatible latex paint, or shading the run, slows this down substantially and costs almost nothing.

Where the failures actually show up

At the equipment ports. Pump, filter, and heater inlets and outlets are plastic threaded or socket connections carrying the load of a rigid pipe that wants to grow and shrink. Cracked pump volutes and split heater unions are common here.

At the first fitting off a long straight run. Elbows and tees absorb the movement and are where hairline cracks form.

At penetrations through concrete and where pipe exits the ground. The transition from stable buried temperature to full-sun exposure concentrates stress.

On water feature and spa lines. These are usually the longest exposed runs and often the shallowest buried, which is also why they are the first casualty of a freeze.

In threaded joints. Repeated expansion and contraction works Teflon tape and thread sealant loose, which is why a fitting that never leaked starts weeping after five years.

Why the leak takes years to appear

Thermal cycling does not create a hole. It creates fatigue — a microscopic crack that grows a fraction with every cycle. The pipe holds fine at first, then weeps only when hot, then weeps constantly, then splits.

This is why a leak often 'appears' during a freeze on plumbing that was already three-quarters fatigued from summer heat. The freeze gets blamed for a failure that summer set up.

It is also why leaks in Central Texas cluster in the same places: exposed water feature plumbing, shallow returns, and the equipment pad. Add expansive clay soil shifting the pipe from below and you have the full picture.

How to build and maintain for it

Allow for movement. Proper support spacing, offsets or swing joints on long runs, and flexible connections at equipment let pipe move without loading a fitting.

Use unions at every piece of equipment. It makes service possible and it isolates the equipment from pipe stress.

Shade or paint exposed pipe. Cheapest longevity improvement available on any pad.

Bury what can be buried and insulate what cannot, especially water feature lines that will face a freeze.

Look at the pad in daylight twice a year. Chalky pipe, hairline cracks near fittings, mineral trails from a slow weep, a damp spot that never dries, and rust bleeding from a bracket are all early tells.

Fix a weep immediately. Wet-side plumbing repairs are inexpensive when they are a weep and expensive when they are a washout under the deck.
