Why this area is hard on pools
Our soil moves. Expansive clay swells when it finally rains and shrinks hard through a dry summer, and everything buried in it — plumbing runs, skimmer throats, light conduit — gets pulled along for the ride. That movement is the single biggest reason plumbing separates here.
Then winter arrives in one night rather than one season. A 75-degree afternoon into a hard freeze puts stress on tile, mastic, and anything holding still water.
Water features are the number one winter offender
Raised spas, spillways, sheer descents, bubblers, grottos, and rock waterfalls all hold water in shallow, exposed plumbing above the pool's waterline. That water is not being circulated the way the main body is, it sits in thin pipe surrounded by cold air on several sides, and it freezes first.
When it freezes it splits a fitting or cracks a shell penetration you cannot see, and the leak shows up in spring as a raised spa that will not hold level overnight.
The prevention is not complicated: run the feature during a freeze so water keeps moving, or drain it and its plumbing before the front arrives. If your automation has a freeze mode, confirm it actually turns the feature valve, not just the main pump — that is the setting most pools get wrong.
Evaporation or a leak? The bucket test
In a Central Texas summer, normal evaporation runs roughly a quarter inch to half an inch a day, more with wind, heat, an uncovered spa, or a running waterfall. More than that consistently is worth investigating.
Fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step so it is partly submerged, mark the water level inside the bucket and outside on the pool wall, and leave the pump running normally for 24 hours. If the pool dropped more than the bucket, you are losing water somewhere other than the sky.
Repeat with the pump off. Losing more with the pump on points at pressure-side plumbing or the equipment pad. Losing more with the pump off points at the shell, the skimmer, or the suction side.
The places leaks usually turn up
Skimmer throats, where the plastic skimmer meets concrete and the two move at different rates. Light niches and conduit. Return fittings. Tile line and cracked mastic at the expansion joint, which lets water get underneath the deck. Pump lids, unions, and valve bodies at the pad, which are the easy ones because you can see them.
Underground plumbing is the expensive one, and also the one that gets misdiagnosed most often. That is why the order matters: rule out the pad, the features, and the visible fittings before anyone starts talking about cutting concrete.
The damage a slow leak does before you notice
Chemistry never holds, because you are diluting the pool with fresh fill water every day and chasing calcium, alkalinity, and stabilizer that keep moving.
The auto-fill masks the whole thing while your water bill climbs. Soil under the deck washes out, which is how coping settles and cracks appear. And if the level ever drops below the skimmer, the pump runs dry and you are buying a seal or a motor.

On service I watch water level trends, auto-fill behavior, wet spots, and the pad, and I will tell you what the pattern points at. Visible wet-side repairs — cracked PVC, failed unions, leaking valves, weeping pad fittings — I fix in house.
