Pumps and motors
A quality variable-speed pump typically gives many years of service when it is not run at full speed constantly and not sitting in standing water or full afternoon sun.
What shortens it: running at maximum RPM around the clock, a clogged pump basket starving the impeller, air leaks on the suction side, and voltage events during storms.
Early warnings: new noise, a hot housing, a pump that struggles to prime, or water weeping from the seal plate.
Filters
Cartridge elements are consumables — with quarterly cleaning they last a few seasons, less on a heavy tree or high-bather-load pool. DE grids last longer but tear and unseat.
Filter tanks themselves last a long time; the bands, air relief assemblies, and O-rings are what fail. Sun exposure and never lubricating an O-ring accounts for most of it.
What shortens it: skipping cleans until pressure spikes, spraying cartridges with a pressure washer, and putting a torn grid back in because it still 'mostly' works.
Salt cells and chlorinators
Cells are rated in hours of production and they wear out — that is normal, not a defect. Hard water shortens the life of a cell that is never cleaned, because scale on the plates both blocks production and forces the system to work harder.
Quarterly cleaning is the single biggest factor you control. Cold water is the second: most systems cut production below roughly 50–60°F, which is why chlorine can crash in January on a salt pool that ran perfectly in July.
Heaters, actuators, cleaners, and surfaces
Gas heaters suffer most from scale inside the heat exchanger, which is a water-balance problem, and from rodents and wasps nesting in them during the months they sit unused.
Valve actuators and automation relays are among the most common small failures — they are inexpensive and easy to overlook until a feature stops working.
Robotic and suction cleaners wear tracks, wheels, bearings, and hoses. Rebuild parts are cheap compared to replacing the unit; ignoring them is what turns one into the other.
Plaster, quartz, and pebble surfaces last as long as the water lets them. Persistently aggressive water can strip years off a surface, and no warranty covers chemistry.
