Know Your Equipment Pad: A Homeowner's Walkthrough

Most owners have never had anyone walk them through the pad. Then something leaks at 9pm and they're standing in front of it with a flashlight. Here's the map.

The order water travels

Water leaves the pool through the skimmers and the main drain, passes through suction valves, into the pump, through the filter, then through a heater if you have one, past a salt cell or chlorinator if you have one, and back to the pool through the returns.

Everything before the pump is suction side. Everything after it is pressure side. That distinction explains most symptoms: suction-side leaks pull air in and make the pump gurgle, while pressure-side leaks spray water.

The pieces, one at a time

Pump: moves the water. The clear lid lets you see the basket. If it's full of air or the basket is packed, everything downstream underperforms.

Filter: cartridge, DE, or sand. The pressure gauge on top is your flow warning light. Know your clean baseline pressure — a rise of roughly 8–10 psi over it generally means it's time.

Heater: only runs when called for, but it needs adequate flow to fire and it's the first thing to scale if the water runs positive on LSI.

Salt cell: makes chlorine from dissolved salt. Scales over time and produces less as it does, which is why it gets pulled and acid-bathed quarterly.

Chlorinator or feeder: erosion feeder for tabs, either inline after the filter or offline on a bypass.

Automation panel: runs schedules, speeds, valve actuators, and freeze protection.

Valves: diverter valves control where water is pulled from and where it goes. Actuators are the motorized ones.

The three things worth knowing how to do

Turn the system off. Know where the breaker is and know how to stop the pump at the panel. This is the answer to most emergencies.

Shut off flow. Know which valves isolate the pad, so a leak becomes a puddle instead of an empty pool.

Drain the pad in a power outage during a freeze. Pumps, filters, and heaters have drain plugs. Standing water in those bodies is what cracks them when the heat is out for a day and the pump can't run. Ask me to show you your specific plugs before you need them.

Reading your pad's warning signs

Air bubbles in the pump lid or at the returns: suction-side air leak — often the pump lid O-ring, a loose drain plug, or low water.

Rising filter pressure: filter is loading. Falling pressure with weak returns: something is restricting suction, usually a basket.

A pump that's loud, hot, or hums without starting: bearings or a starting problem. Stop running it.

Water dripping from the underside of the pump between motor and wet end: the shaft seal is going.

Rust streaks, wasp nests, mulch piled against the motor, or sprinkler overspray hitting the pad: all shorten equipment life and all are easy to fix.

Where the boundary sits

Plumbing, valves, filters, pump wet ends, cleaners, feeders, and salt cell cleaning are handled directly.

Anything involving the breaker panel, high-voltage wiring, bonding, or gas lines goes to a licensed professional. That's not a preference, it's a licensing line — and it protects you.
