Surviving a 100-Degree Stretch: What Your Pool Needs

A Central Texas heat wave changes every number in the pool at once. Owners who keep doing exactly what worked in May are the ones fighting green water in August.

What heat does to chemistry

Chlorine demand climbs sharply. Warmer water speeds every reaction, UV is at its strongest, and the biological load is at its peak. The same dose that held a pool in April will not hold it in July.

Algae grows fastest in warm, sunny, high-organic water. There is no dormant period in an August pool. A day of low chlorine is enough to start a bloom.

LSI shifts with temperature. Hotter water pushes the index up toward scaling, so a pool that was perfectly balanced at 70°F can start depositing calcium at 90°F with nothing else changed. This is a real reason tile lines scale in late summer.

pH tends to rise from aeration, water features, and salt cell operation, which compounds the scaling risk. Acid demand goes up right when everything else does.

Evaporation dilutes stabilizer and concentrates calcium simultaneously, because what leaves is pure water and what refills is hard tap water.

The heat-wave adjustments

Raise sanitizer targets, not just doses. Chlorine needs to be held relative to your CYA level, and in peak heat that target is at the upper end of the range, not the middle.

Shock in the evening. Anything you add at midday is partly gone before it works.

Increase circulation, but at low speed. Turnover matters most in the heat, and the pump matters most in the heat, so long and slow beats short and loud.

Brush more, especially the shaded walls and the steps. That is where a bloom starts before you can see it in the open water.

Watch phosphates. Heavy bather load, sunscreen, sweat, and lawn fertilizer runoff push them up and give algae fuel exactly when chlorine is under stress.

Check the water level daily-ish. Low water means air in the skimmer, which means a pump running dry in the worst possible conditions.

Bather load is a chemistry event

A pool full of people on a 105-degree Saturday takes a real hit: sunscreen, sweat, body oils, and organics all consume chlorine and produce combined chloramines — the smell people mistakenly call 'too much chlorine.'

Big gatherings deserve a plan. Balance before, shock after, and rinse before entry cuts most of the load.

This is why one-time party prep and post-event balancing exist as a service. A pool can go from clear to hazy in 24 hours after a big weekend in the heat.

Comfort and the 90-degree pool

In a long Texas heat wave, pool water can reach the high 80s or low 90s and stop being refreshing. Warm water also holds less chlorine, grows more algae, and is less pleasant.

What helps: run water features and fountains overnight to release heat, run the pump during the coolest hours, and consider aeration. What does not help: adding ice, which is a fun photo and thermodynamically pointless.

If a pool routinely gets uncomfortably warm, a heat pump that can run in chiller mode is the real answer, and it is worth discussing before a build rather than after.

The equipment side of a heat wave

This is the season pumps die. Keep baskets clean, keep the water level up, run cooler hours at higher speed and hot hours at low speed, and make sure air can move around the motor.

Filter pressure climbs faster in summer because the pool is loading the filter faster. A clean filter in July is worth two in January.

If the pump shuts off in the afternoon and restarts in the evening, do not wait it out. It is telling you it is overheating.
