Free Nights Electricity Plans and Why Night-Only Pool Runtime Backfires in Summer

Several Texas retail electricity plans give away nights or weekends, and the first instinct is to move all pool runtime into those free hours. In the cooler months that can work beautifully. In a 100-degree summer it usually creates algae, chlorine loss, and a service call that costs more than the electricity ever saved.

Why night-only runtime fails in summer

Sunlight is what destroys chlorine, and it destroys it during the day. If the pump only runs at night, your pool spends the entire high-UV, high-heat, high-swimmer stretch with no circulation moving sanitizer around and, on a salt pool, with the cell producing nothing at all.

Salt pools are the clearest example. A salt cell only makes chlorine while water is flowing through it. Run the pump from 8pm to 8am and every bit of chlorine your system produced overnight gets burned off by noon, with nothing being made to replace it.

Stagnant daytime water in July also warms and stratifies. Warm, still, sunlit water with organic load from swimmers, sunscreen, pollen and dust is close to ideal conditions for algae. It usually shows up first on steps and in shaded corners where nothing is moving.

The debris side gets worse too. Skimmers only skim while the pump runs. Twelve daylight hours of no skimming means everything that lands on the surface sinks, and sunken debris stains plaster and feeds chlorine demand.

The runtime rule of thumb for Central Texas

The working guideline is roughly one hour of runtime for every 10 degrees of air temperature. On a 100-degree day that is about ten hours, and in practice most Central Texas pools land around twelve hours in peak summer once you account for bather load, debris and equipment.

That is a starting point, not a law. A pool under heavy oak canopy, a pool with a small filter, a pool with heavy weekend use, or a pool with a salt cell that is undersized for the gallons all need more. A shaded, lightly used pool with an oversized filter may need less.

The number that actually matters is turnover — moving the pool's full volume through the filter, ideally once or twice a day. Runtime is just the lever we use to get there, and it changes with the seasons.

How to actually use a free-nights plan

Split the schedule instead of moving all of it. Keep a solid daytime block running through the hottest, sunniest hours so chlorine is circulating and, on salt pools, being produced when demand is highest. Then push the remaining hours into your free window at night.

A common summer split is a long midday-through-afternoon run on a moderate speed, plus a night run inside the free hours to finish turnover and skim overnight debris. You still capture most of the free-hour benefit without leaving the pool unprotected all day.

In the cooler months the math flips. Once water drops through the 60s, UV is weak, chlorine demand is low, and algae is largely dormant. That is when shifting most or even all runtime into free overnight hours makes real sense, and it is a genuine savings for anyone on one of those plans.

Speed matters as much as hours

On a variable-speed pump, most of the day should not be spent at high RPM. Power draw rises roughly with the cube of speed, so halving the speed cuts energy use dramatically while still moving water — you simply run longer hours to reach the same turnover.

A typical setup uses a low or medium speed for the long filtration block, a higher speed for a shorter window when the cleaner needs pressure or flow, and high speed only for specific jobs like priming, a spa, water features, or a heater's minimum flow requirement.

Running high RPM for twelve hours to be safe is the most expensive way to own a pool, and it does not clean better. Beyond the flow your filter and skimmers can actually use, extra speed mostly makes noise and heat.

There is a floor, though. Too low and you lose skimming action, the cleaner stops working, a salt cell may not register flow, and a heater will not fire. Finding the lowest speed that still does the job well is part of what gets dialed in during service.

Signs your runtime is wrong

Chlorine is present the morning after service and gone by evening. That is daytime UV outrunning your circulation, and a night-only schedule is a common cause.

Algae keeps returning on steps, benches and shaded walls even though chemistry tests look reasonable. Those are dead spots where water is not moving.

The surface stays covered in debris between visits while the water below looks fine. The skimmers are not running during the hours things are landing in the pool.

A salt pool that will not hold chlorine even with the cell turned up. Output is a function of runtime — turning percentage up cannot make up for hours the pump never ran.

The opposite also happens: a winter pool running summer hours at high speed. That is not harming the water, it is just quietly spending money.

What gets watched on service

Water temperature is on every digital report, and runtime recommendations get adjusted against it as the seasons move rather than left on one setting all year.

Runtime changes happen at the transitions: spring warm-up, the start of triple digits, the fall cool-down, and the first cold stretch. Freeze protection is a separate matter and overrides everything when temperatures approach freezing.
