Cartridge filters
Cartridges catch fine debris in pleated media. They are simple and use no backwash water, which matters during a drought.
They need to come out, get separated, and be cleaned through every pleat. Oils and mineral buildup that a hose cannot touch require a soak. Skipping that is why cartridges get replaced every two years instead of every five.
DE filters
Diatomaceous earth filters give the finest filtration available on a residential pool. In exchange, the grids need periodic teardown, inspection, and recharge.
Torn grids and cracked manifolds leak DE straight back into the pool. That is a visible symptom most owners mistake for an algae problem.
How often
Most Central Texas pools want service on the filter one to two times a year, sooner if pressure climbs eight to ten psi above the clean baseline, flow drops, or the pool stops holding clarity.
