Where our calcium comes from
Central Texas sits on limestone. Municipal and well water here routinely fills a pool at high calcium hardness before a single chemical is added, and every gallon of evaporation leaves that calcium behind while taking none with it.
In a Texas summer a pool can lose an inch of water a day. Over a season that is a large volume of water leaving and a large amount of calcium staying, which is why hardness climbs on its own.
Carbonate vs silicate — they are not the same problem
Calcium carbonate is the chalky, slightly crumbly white scale at the waterline. It reacts to acid, it is the more common of the two, and it comes off comparatively easily.
Calcium silicate is harder, grayer, and often has a smoother, glassy look. It does not react to acid and it takes far longer to form, so its presence means the water has been running scale-forming for a long time.
Treating silicate like carbonate wastes time and money. Treating tile like it is bulletproof damages it. Identification comes first.
Why it hits stone harder than tile
Travertine, flagstone, limestone coping, and cut stone waterfalls are porous. Scale does not sit on top of them, it grows into them, and aggressive removal takes surface stone with it.
Glass tile is its own hazard — the wrong blasting media or too much pressure permanently hazes the finish, and there is no undo.
Removal is a specialty trade
Bead blasting, glass bead, and salt or soda blasting are the usual methods, and each is chosen for the surface, not for convenience. It takes equipment, containment, and real experience reading a tile line.
We do not perform calcium removal. We identify it, tell you which type you have, and refer you to a specialist who does it correctly.
Stopping it from coming back
Removal without a chemistry change buys you about eighteen months. Scale forms when LSI runs positive — high calcium hardness, high pH, high alkalinity, and warm water together push calcium out of solution.
LSI-based balancing keeps calcium dissolved where it belongs. Where hardness has climbed too far to manage, partial drain and refill is the honest answer.
Practical prevention: keep pH from drifting up, watch alkalinity, do not ignore hardness readings, keep water features and spillovers in mind since aeration drives pH up fast, and top off with a plan rather than a hose left running.
