Baskets, Cleaners, and Why Flow Is the Whole Game

The chain from skimmer to return

Water leaves through the skimmer and main drain, passes the pump basket, goes through the pump, then the filter, then back to the pool through the returns. Every restriction anywhere in that chain reduces turnover.

A skimmer basket packed with leaves starves the pump. A starved pump moves less water, heats up, and in a bad case loses prime entirely.

What people skip

Pump basket lids get cross-threaded or the O-ring dries out, and the pump pulls air instead of water. Bubbles in the pump pot are a warning, not a quirk.

Suction-side cleaner bags and canisters fill up and stop collecting. A cleaner dragging a full bag around is just exercise.

Return eyeballs get aimed straight up or straight at a wall instead of angled to roll the whole pool over. One eyeball turned the right way can eliminate a dead corner.

Pressure tells you the truth

Write down the filter pressure right after a proper filter clean. That is your clean baseline. When the gauge climbs roughly 8-10 psi above it, the filter needs service — not on a calendar, on that number.

A pressure reading that drops instead of climbing usually means a flow restriction before the filter: a basket, a clogged skimmer throat, or a closing valve.
